Community service is a cornerstone of the guild's mission. Each year guild members donate their time and skills making quilts to share with the community through our Comfort Quilt Program. Member participation in the Opportunity Raffle Quilt and Quilter's Garage Sale help provide monetary donations to the community. Northwestern Hospital NICU Quilts
We’ll be making quilts for the Northwestern Hospital NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) located in Huntley. There is no deadline or required by date. Bring your finished quilts to any guild meeting or drop off at Kathleen Brown's house in Wonder Lake.
NICU Quilt Guidelines
DO:
Use only cotton fabric.
DON’T:
Don’t use monofilament or metallic thread.
Don’t use fabric with metallic thread or glitter.
Recommended sizes and their use:
12” X 18” - for the tiniest of preemies or for bereavement quilts
22” X 22” to 24” X 30” - for preemies and at risk newborns
30” X 30” to 36” X 36” - to be placed on top of an isolette unit.
Use any pattern you like. Here’s a few ideas:
• Four patch, nine patch, or even just wide strips of pretty coordinating fabrics.
• Enlarge a favorite block and then add borders.
• Use a panel (or partial panel) as the entire quilt top.
• Make a few extra blocks when you make a quilt & use them to make a NICU quilt.
• Charm squares with sashing.
• Charm squares without sashing.
• Rail fence
You can get elaborate if you like but simple quilts can be lovely, too.
Just have fun and stitch up some comfort!
